Cycling Along the Kettle Valley Railway Trail |
|
| Canadian Spirit Newsletter June 2008 Newsletter No. 5 We are finally heading into summer after such a long winter. The ski hills could have stayed open another 2 weeks easily and spring has not exactly been the warmest on record. Everyone is saying the cherries will be late this year (they usually are ready to pick in late June), and Atsuko still cannot believe it is going to get hot here. However, as my brother-in-law often says, “summer in the Okanagan returns every year with a vengeance!” As for myself, I cannot wait to go swimming in the lakes again. The community pool here is great but nothing beats swimming and frolicking in the great outdoors. I have started venturing outside more and more these past weeks. Last week I dusted off my “recreational bike” (apparently, there is a difference between a mountain bike and a recreational bike – the cheaper version maybe?) and made my way along the Kettle Valley Railway Trail from Penticton to nearby Naramata. The trail is very easy going (perfect for an old guy like me) and it takes you through the vineyards and up above the east side of Okanagan Lake. As you can imagine, the scenery is fantastic and I have also encountered deer and marmot along the way. You can see the pictures on my Facebook page here: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2001865&l=53d30&id=1262470582
May was a busy and exciting month for us. On May 3 we put on a
traditional Japanese tea ceremony at the Japanese Gardens in
Penticton. Our homestay guest, Mutsuko, performed the tea ceremony
outdoors; Atsuko and Angela both played the koto; two of our
friends – Yoshie and Etsuyo – organized calligraphy and origami
workshops. The event was held to commemorate the 80th anniversary
of diplomatic relations between Canada and Japan as well as to
give Mutsuko the opportunity to show off her cultural skills.
About 100 people showed up to the event, and we received a lot of
press and support from the local business community, South
Okanagan Immigrant and Community Services, and the Japanese
Consulate-General in Vancouver. It was a lot of work but well
worth the effort. You can read more about the tea ceremony here: Lester’s Okanagan Blog |
