Okanagan Valley Climate

The climate of the Okanagan Valley is often compared to the Napa Valley in California. The summers are warm with hot days, cool nights, and fairly low humidity. These conditions attract visitors who experience camping, boating, and other water sports on the large lakes in the valley. These temperatures also contribute to the Okanagan's semi-arid environment which accounts for the large number of fruit orchards, vegetable farms, gardens, and wineries in the area.

The winters are mild compared to the rest of Canada. Winter days are occasionally cold, with cool dry air and cloudy skies. The snowy terrain together with the natural beauty make the Okanagan a winter destination for skiers and snowboarders with the temperature rarely dipping below -10 degrees C (-14 degrees F).. The local mountain ranges collect an abundance of snow creating some of Canada's best powder skiing.

While climate is fairly consistent throughout the valley, temperatures and conditions do vary from town to town. The central and northern Okanagan, for example, experience more humidity than the southern Okanagan. Indeed, in Osoyoos, a town which borders the US, possess Canada's only true desert. The flora and fauna also vary throughout the valley depending on the location.
